You Can't Take It With You
By George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart
MARCH 18 – APRIL 3, 2011
Directed by Kay Files
Produced by special arrangement Dramatists Play Service.
You Can't Take It with You, set during the Depression, is on the surface, the story of star-crossed lovers, Alice Sycamore and Tony Kirby. Alice lives with her eccentric family, headed by the venerable Grandpa Martin Vanderhof, who doesn't pay income taxes because he doesn't believe in them. Their house is alive with the idiosyncratic pursuits of each of its members; Penny distractedly types away at a novel, Essie dances spontaneously through the house, and Paul works in the basement manufacturing fireworks. When Tony, son of conservative banker Anthony Kirby, brings his parents to meet Alice's family, the clash of values explodes with humorous and life-changing results. Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman received the Pulitzer Prize for this play.
One of the most popular and successful plays of modern times.
