Playmakers' 2014-15 Season
By Joe Orton
Directed by Anysia Manthos Genre with Kay Files
March 6-22, 2015
Auditions: January 12 & 14, 7-9 p.m.
Auditions are at the theater, with cold readings from the script. The play is a very dark BRITISH farce (with accents, which will be taught). The time is 60s London, with lots of music by the Beatles.
Cast includes: 2 dudes 20-30, best friends who are also bank robbers and worse, but really cool guys (bad boys that attract the girls).
One woman, 25-40, should be good looking, sexy, masquarading as a nurse (are you busy?), One man, 60ish, a widower and confused and takes a beating (not really); one hilarious "Inspector Clouseau" type police officer, the funniest character in the play (imo).
A masterpiece of black farce, Loot follows the fortunes of two young thieves. Dennis works for an undertaker. Hal's old Mum has just died. They rob the bank next door to the funeral parlour and find just the place to hide the loot. With the money hidden in Mum's coffin, there's no place for Mum whose body keeps re-appearing at the most inopportune times. When Inspector Truscott turns up, the already thickened plot goes topsy-turvy. Loot saw its premiere in London in 1966 and remains on of the most potent works from this master of the macabre.
